About this guide
Recommendations reflect publisher-supported subjects, formats and intended readers. We have not completed full-book reviews or tested the exercises.
A useful first SEO book should match how you want to learn. Some beginners want an introduction they can finish away from a screen. Others want assignments for a real website, or a reference they can return to as their questions become more specific.
These four starting points serve different needs. Choose the format and scope that will help you begin.
Choose your learning format
| What you want | Book to consider |
|---|---|
| An introductory hardcover for reading offline | Ahrefs’ SEO Book for Beginners |
| A broad map of traditional SEO work | Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies |
| Assignments and companion resources | Jason McDonald’s SEO Workbook |
| One substantial reference across disciplines | The Art of SEO |
An offline introduction: Ahrefs’ SEO Book for Beginners
Tim Soulo, Joshua Hardwick and Patrick Stox’s 2023 hardcover introduces subjects including search engines, keyword research and link building. Ahrefs describes seven chapters in the print book. Publisher’s listing.
This is a format-driven choice: consider it if a physical introduction will help you concentrate. If you prefer learning online, try Ahrefs’ current beginner guide before buying. The website now has ten chapters, including AI-search material; it is not an identical copy of the seven-chapter hardcover.
A broad introduction: SEO For Dummies
Peter Kent’s seventh edition is the 2020 release. Its chapter-resource list spans search basics, keywords, page creation, speed, mobile design, structured data, content, local search and links. Author’s edition page.
Consider it when you want to understand the range of jobs involved in improving a website. That breadth may help a website owner identify which questions to ask next. Keep current platform documentation alongside the older edition when following specific instructions, and check the author and edition when comparing listings.
A learning-by-doing format: SEO Workbook
Jason McDonald describes a seven-step approach with chapter deliverables, worksheets, videos and quizzes. The official product page identifies the 2025 edition. Author’s description.
Consider this if you want a book to organize practical work. Its assignment format is the reason for the recommendation; allow time to do the work as well as read. The companion-resource index uses edition-specific registration and a password from the book, so check how your chosen format provides access.
A longer-term reference: The Art of SEO
The fourth edition by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola is designed to progress from introductory chapters into more complex material. The visible preface directs new readers toward the early chapters, then strategy and keyword research in chapters five and six. Publisher’s preface preview.
Consider it if you want breadth and are comfortable working through a substantial book over time. If a large reference would delay getting started, choose a more focused introduction first and return to this when you have specific questions.
What to read alongside your first book
Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a useful current companion for discovery, site organization, content, links and search appearance. Keep it alongside your chosen book for checking platform-specific guidance.
If your main interest is how businesses appear in generated answers, compare the subjects in our AI SEO books guide. If you already know the fundamentals and need a specialist skill, move to the advanced SEO books guide.
For a complete beginner, the practical first choice is between reading, doing and reference. Pick the format you are most likely to use, then choose a book that covers the questions you have now.
