About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

Both are beginner books on traditional SEO, so the choice comes down to coverage, approach and age. Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies (7th edition, Wiley, 2020) is a broad introduction that maps the main jobs in SEO, including speed, mobile design and structured data. Matthew Capala’s SEO Like I’m 5 (self-published, 2014, Kindle updated to a 3rd edition in 2016) is a jargon-free first look centered on content, blogging and outreach. If you want the more recent, broader introduction, read Kent; if technical language puts you off and you mainly blog or run a small business, Capala is written for you.

What each book is about

SEO For Dummies is Peter Kent’s introduction in Wiley’s For Dummies series. His author page identifies the seventh edition, released in 2020, and lists resources chapter by chapter. The chapters start with search engines, search results and planning, move through keyword selection, page creation, speed, mobile design and structured data, then cover content, local search, indexing, links, images and video, with closing chapters on problems and staying informed. Earlier editions used the longer title Search Engine Optimization For Dummies. Author’s edition page.

SEO Like I’m 5: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization is Matthew Capala’s book for readers who want SEO explained without technical jargon. Capala founded the Alphametic agency and taught as an NYU adjunct professor. The description names entrepreneurs, small business owners, marketers, students, authors and bloggers as readers, and presents SEO as being as much about content, social presence and relationships as about code. Listed topics include free platforms and tools, building a search-friendly website, content strategy and blogging, keyword opportunities, earning backlinks, blogger and influencer outreach and social media strategy, with step-by-step instructions and many screenshots. No public table of contents was found. Retailer description.

Where they differ

Coverage. Both introduce keywords, content, links and building a search-friendly site. Kent’s chapter list adds dedicated material on speed, mobile design, structured data, local search, indexing, and images and video. Capala puts more weight on blogging, outreach and social media.

Approach. Capala’s promise is plain language, screenshots and step-by-step instructions for non-technical readers. Kent follows the For Dummies chapter structure and keeps a chapter-by-chapter resource list on his author site.

Age. SEO For Dummies is six years newer than SEO Like I’m 5’s latest update. Capala’s text dates from 2014, with the Kindle edition updated in 2016, and the paperback may still carry the older text. Its description leans on that era’s blogging, social platforms and free tools, and it predates mobile-first indexing and Core Web Vitals. Kent’s 2020 instructions also need checking against current documentation such as Google’s SEO Starter Guide.

Publisher. SEO For Dummies is a Wiley title; SEO Like I’m 5 is self-published. That is publication information, not a quality judgment.

Neither book covers today’s AI search: Kent’s edition predates ChatGPT-era AI search, and Capala wrote before it existed. A beginner whose question is how a business shows up in ChatGPT or Google’s AI experiences might look at AI SEO for Dummies, a 2026 title in the same Wiley For Dummies series as Kent’s book, covering visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It adds a subject; it is not an introduction to traditional SEO.
