About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs. Rodrigo Stockebrand’s Answer Engine Optimization (O’Reilly, 2026) is an intermediate to advanced field guide to AEO implementation: retrieval, technical access, content and measurement for AI-driven search. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for traditional SEO, and its listing says it is not a how-to book. If you run the AI-discovery work, read Stockebrand; if SEO stalls in your company because other departments are not accountable for it, read Bowman.

What each book is about

Answer Engine Optimization: A Field Guide for Navigating AI-Driven Search and Discovery is Stockebrand’s book, listed by O’Reilly as a 292-page platform edition in July 2026 and classified as intermediate to advanced. The contents connect how answer engines retrieve information with technical access (bot controls, structured data, rendering and discoverability), passage-level content and retrieval audits, and brand entities. The measurement chapter covers sampling, volatility, sentiment, referral analytics and attribution, and platform sections cover Google’s AI experiences, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Industry examples include ecommerce, B2B, local businesses and regulated sectors. Publisher details and contents.

The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Table of contents.

Where they differ

Subject. Stockebrand is about answer engines: how they retrieve content, how to make a site accessible and extractable, and how to measure visibility. Bowman is about traditional SEO as a company-wide operation. Her 2017 book does not cover AI search; her current biography presents her as an AI visibility consultant, but that is not book content.

Implementation versus organization. Stockebrand’s contents are practitioner material: bot controls, rendering, passage-level writing, sampling and attribution. Bowman explicitly avoids instructions for technical fixes and focuses on getting product, development, UX, merchandising and PR teams to own their part.

Where they meet. Both suit organizations with several teams. Stockebrand’s scope fits technical, content and reporting teams that need a shared approach to AI discovery. Bowman offers the accountability structures, training and integration plan for making any search program stick across departments.

Reader and era. Stockebrand is for experienced practitioners; Bowman for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO) and in-house leads who know the basics. The July 2026 date is the O’Reilly platform record, not a verified release date for every format. Bowman’s 2017 appendix links should be checked against current practice.

A third option for a step-by-step beginner start

Both books assume experience. A different reader, a business owner or marketer new to AI search who wants a step-by-step start, might look at AI SEO for Dummies, a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It is an alternative entry point for that reader, not a replacement for Stockebrand’s depth or Bowman’s organizational focus.
