Quick answer
If you need to decide what SEO should accomplish rather than how to organize it, read Product-Led SEO. If your organization is asking how to run AI search across teams, Ross Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization has a chapter on building a GEO-first organization. If you need to do the work yourself, choose a practical reference such as The Art of SEO.
Why readers look for an alternative
Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook argues that SEO stalls in large companies when the teams whose work affects search are not accountable for it. Its 12 chapters cover an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building, training and a step-by-step integration plan. Table of contents.
That is a specific job, and several things push readers elsewhere:
- Published in June 2017. Nothing in the contents covers AI search, AEO or GEO.
- Not a how-to. The listing says so plainly. Readers who need keyword research or technical instructions will not find them.
- Enterprise focus. It is written for executives (the author names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO) and in-house teams at large organizations, and it assumes SEO basics.
- Author-published. SEOinhouse.com, the author’s own firm, published the 198-page hardcover. No later edition was found, and the appendix links date from 2017. Author’s book page.
Alternatives by reason
You need strategy, not organizational design
Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (Houndstooth Press, 2021) is written for marketing managers, executives and experienced practitioners. Like Bowman’s book it is not a step-by-step guide, but its subject is the reasoning behind an organic growth strategy and its connection to business results. Author’s description.
You are organizing teams around AI search
Ross Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization (Wiley, 2026) is written for practitioners, marketing leaders and CMOs. Chapter 8, “Building a GEO-First Organization”, covers communication design, stakeholder buy-in, popular GEO roles, and titles and career paths. Other chapters cover GEO strategy, content, digital PR and three case studies. Official contents.
Your content teams are adopting AI
Catherine Seda and Jenny Halasz’s AI-Powered Content Marketing and SEO (Addison-Wesley, 2025) opens with a blog article passing through creative, brand, content, SEO and ecommerce teams. Its contents connect search with authenticity, risk, operations and analytics, which suits a cross-functional discussion about how AI changes content work. Publisher contents.
Developers and marketers need a shared reference
Matthew Edgar’s Tech SEO Guide (Apress, 2023) is subtitled A Reference Guide for Developers and Marketers Involved in Technical SEO. Its nine chapters cover crawling and indexing, URLs, content structure, schema, sitemaps, page experience, errors and redirects. It suits organizations where the accountability Bowman describes depends on development teams understanding search.
You need to do the SEO work yourself
The Art of SEO (O’Reilly, 4th edition, 2023, 773 pages) is a broad reference covering intent, keyword research, architecture, technical SEO, structured data, analytics, links and local search.

Keep The Executive SEO Playbook if
Keep Bowman’s book if you are an executive or in-house SEO lead at a large organization and the bottleneck is not knowledge but accountability: product, development, UX, merchandising, PR and other teams make decisions that affect search without being measured on them. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com, and Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Its subject is organizational process, which dates more slowly than tactics, though you should check the appendix links and any team-structure examples against current practice.
