About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs for different organizations. Chris McCarron’s CITED (2026, updated July 2026) is written for business owners and focuses on getting a business recommended in AI answers. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for traditional SEO, and its listing says it is not a how-to book. If you own a business and want to know how it shows up in ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews, read CITED; if you run a large company where SEO stalls between departments, read Bowman.

What each book is about

CITED is Chris McCarron’s book about getting a business recommended in AI search. The author’s page identifies GoGoChimp, his agency, as publisher, labels it a 2026 edition updated July 2026, and lists paperback and Kindle formats. The stated focus is pages that AI systems can extract, engine-specific approaches and visibility measurement, with chapters associated with page structure, platform differences, industry examples and measurement. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews are named in the positioning. Author’s book page.

The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Table of contents.

Where they differ

Subject. CITED is about AI answers: whether AI systems can extract your pages and recommend your business, and how to measure that. Bowman’s book is about traditional SEO as a company-wide operation: roles, accountability, training and an integration plan. Her current biography presents her as an AI visibility consultant, but the 2017 book does not cover AI search.

Reader and organization. CITED speaks to an owner asking a direct question about their own business. Bowman writes for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and staff in product, development, UX, merchandising and PR at large organizations, and assumes SEO basics.

Practical material. CITED’s stated focus is page structure, engine-specific approaches and measurement. Bowman’s practical material is the integration plan and two appendices of how-to resources and enterprise in-house links.

Evidence and era. CITED’s page promotes a scoring tool and agency results that we have not independently verified, and its place in the author company’s own best-book list is not an independent recommendation. Bowman’s 2017 process advice ages more slowly than tactics, but check her appendix links against current practice. Both are published through the author’s own firm, which is publication information, not a quality judgment.

A third option for a step-by-step beginner start

CITED already covers AI search for owners. A different reader, an owner or marketer who wants a step-by-step start with worksheets, might look at AI SEO for Dummies, a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It is an alternative for that reader, not a replacement for either book.

Which should you read?

  • If you own a business and want to know how it gets recommended in AI answers, read CITED, and look for a sample to judge how it connects evidence and actions.
  • If you want a focus on extractable pages and engine-specific approaches, read CITED.
  • If you are an executive at a large company and SEO keeps losing out to other departments’ priorities, read The Executive SEO Playbook.
  • If you lead in-house SEO and need a plan for training and integrating other teams, read Bowman.
  • If you want both, they rarely fit the same reader. An enterprise leader could use Bowman to organize the company and CITED to see the AI-recommendation question from an owner’s angle.
