About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs. Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies (7th edition, 2020) teaches what SEO involves: a broad beginner introduction for website owners. Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (2021) is about deciding what SEO should accomplish for a business, written for managers, executives and experienced practitioners. If you are learning SEO, read Kent; if you are setting or defending an SEO strategy, read Schwartz.

What each book is about

SEO For Dummies is Peter Kent’s introduction in Wiley’s For Dummies series. His author page identifies the seventh edition, released in 2020, and lists resources chapter by chapter. The chapters start with search engines, search results and planning, move through keyword selection, page creation, speed, mobile design and structured data, then cover content, local search, indexing, links, images and video, with closing chapters on problems and staying informed. Earlier editions used the longer title Search Engine Optimization For Dummies. Author’s edition page.

Product-Led SEO: The Why Behind Building Your Organic Growth Strategy is Eli Schwartz’s book, published by Houndstooth Press in 2021. The author emphasizes the reasoning behind a strategy and its connection to business results, and describes an approach to developing your own practices rather than following a universal recipe. He explicitly distinguishes it from step-by-step instructions. Author’s description.

Where they differ

The job. This is the difference that matters. Kent’s book explains how the parts of a website contribute to search, from keywords and pages to links and indexing. Schwartz’s book is not a manual: it is about why and where to invest in organic growth. One builds skills; the other informs decisions.

The reader. Kent writes for website owners starting out. Schwartz writes for people who already work with SEO or manage those who do. A newcomer reading Product-Led SEO first may lack the vocabulary to apply it.

Format. SEO For Dummies follows a chapter-by-chapter structure with a resource list on the author’s site. Product-Led SEO offers a way of thinking rather than a catalogue of tactics. Note that “product-led SEO” also names an approach, and later articles about it may go beyond the 2021 text.

Age. Both predate current AI search. Kent’s tool and platform instructions should be checked against current documentation such as Google’s SEO Starter Guide. Schwartz’s strategic reasoning depends less on interfaces, but it was written in 2021.

Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. If that is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 title in the same Wiley For Dummies series as Kent’s book, covering visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It adds a subject; it is not a substitute for either a traditional introduction or a strategy book.
