About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books are not really rivals: one explains how to do SEO, the other why and where to invest in it. The Art of SEO (O’Reilly, 4th edition, 2023) is a broad reference spanning intent, keywords, technical SEO, links, analytics and local search. Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (2021) is a strategy book for managers, executives and experienced practitioners deciding what SEO should accomplish for a business. If you do the work, read The Art of SEO; if you set or defend the strategy, read Product-Led SEO.

What each book is about

The Art of SEO is written by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola, and O’Reilly published the 773-page fourth edition in September 2023. Its contents move from search intent, keyword research and planning into site architecture, technical SEO and structured data, then analytics, auditing, links and local search, with one generative AI chapter covering capabilities, prompting and limitations. The authorized chapter-six sample turns keyword brainstorming into a working spreadsheet that connects terms to business priorities, topics and pages. Publisher contents.

Product-Led SEO: The Why Behind Building Your Organic Growth Strategy is Eli Schwartz’s book, published by Houndstooth Press in 2021. The author positions it for marketing managers, executives and experienced practitioners, with an emphasis on the reasoning behind a strategy and its connection to business results. He explicitly distinguishes it from step-by-step instructions and describes an approach to developing your own practices rather than following a universal recipe. Author’s description.

Where they differ

The job. The Art of SEO is a manual and reference: its chapters are organized by discipline, from architecture to links. Product-Led SEO is about deciding what your organic growth effort is for. One helps you execute; the other helps you choose what to execute.

The reader. O’Reilly labels The Art of SEO beginner level, and its contents start from search fundamentals. Schwartz writes for people who already work with SEO or manage those who do, so a newcomer may want vocabulary from another book first.

Format. The Art of SEO’s public sample shows planning worksheets, asking the reader to organize decisions as well as understand concepts. Product-Led SEO offers a way of thinking, not a catalogue of tactics. Note that “product-led SEO” also names an approach, and later articles about it may go beyond the 2021 text.

Publisher and era. The Art of SEO is a long O’Reilly reference from 2023. Product-Led SEO came from Houndstooth Press in 2021. Strategic reasoning tends to age more slowly than platform instructions, but check the latter in any edition against current documentation.

Neither book covers current AI search. Product-Led SEO predates it, and The Art of SEO has one 2023 chapter on generative AI capabilities, prompting and limitations rather than visibility in AI answers. If that visibility is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title covering AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit adds a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It is a different job from strategy or a traditional reference, not a substitute for either.

Which should you read?

  • If you are a manager or executive deciding what SEO should accomplish, read Product-Led SEO.
  • If you need to make or explain an SEO investment case to leadership, read Product-Led SEO.
  • If you carry out SEO work and want a reference across disciplines, read The Art of SEO.
  • If you are new to SEO, start with The Art of SEO, which O’Reilly labels beginner, or a dedicated introduction such as SEO For Dummies, before Schwartz’s strategy book.
  • If you want both, practitioners can read The Art of SEO first, then Product-Led SEO when they need to shape strategy. Managers can read Product-Led SEO first to set direction, then keep The Art of SEO as the team’s reference.
