Quick answer
These books do different jobs for different readers. Matthew Capala’s SEO Like I’m 5 (self-published, 2014, Kindle updated to a 3rd edition in 2016) explains SEO basics in plain language for non-technical beginners. Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (2021) is about deciding what SEO should accomplish for a business, written for managers, executives and experienced practitioners. If you are learning what SEO is, read Capala; if you are setting or defending an SEO strategy, read Schwartz.
What each book is about
Product-Led SEO: The Why Behind Building Your Organic Growth Strategy is Eli Schwartz’s book, published by Houndstooth Press in 2021. The author emphasizes the reasoning behind a strategy and its connection to business results, and describes an approach to developing your own practices rather than following a universal recipe. He explicitly distinguishes it from step-by-step instructions. Author’s description.
SEO Like I’m 5: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization is Matthew Capala’s book for readers who want SEO explained without technical jargon. Capala founded the Alphametic agency and taught as an NYU adjunct professor. The description names entrepreneurs, small business owners, marketers, students, authors and bloggers as readers, and presents SEO as being as much about content, social presence and relationships as about code. Listed topics include free platforms and tools, building a search-friendly website, content strategy and blogging, keyword opportunities, earning backlinks, blogger and influencer outreach and social media strategy, with step-by-step instructions and many screenshots. No public table of contents was found. Retailer description.
Where they differ
The job. This is the difference that matters. Capala’s book teaches what to do: build a search-friendly site, write content, find keywords, earn links. Schwartz’s book is about why and where to invest in organic growth. One builds first skills; the other informs decisions. There is little overlap.
The reader. Capala writes for beginners without a technical background, from bloggers to small business owners. Schwartz writes for people who already work with SEO or manage those who do. A newcomer reading Product-Led SEO first may lack the vocabulary to apply it.
Format. SEO Like I’m 5 promises step-by-step instructions with screenshots. Product-Led SEO offers a way of thinking rather than a catalogue of tactics. Note that “product-led SEO” also names an approach, and later articles about it may go beyond the 2021 text.
Age. Capala’s text dates from 2014, with the Kindle edition updated in 2016; the paperback may still carry the older text, and its tools, platforms and outreach tactics need checking against current practice. Schwartz’s reasoning depends less on interfaces, but it was written in 2021.
A third option for AI search
Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. A beginner who wants Capala’s plain-language approach applied to that question might look at AI SEO for Dummies, a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It is not a strategy book like Schwartz’s, and it adds a subject rather than replacing a traditional beginner book.

No. Eli Schwartz positions Product-Led SEO for marketing managers, executives and experienced practitioners. SEO Like I’m 5 is written for beginners without a technical background.
Should I read SEO Like I’m 5 before Product-Led SEO?
If you are new to SEO, a beginner book first helps, since Schwartz’s strategic reasoning assumes you know what SEO involves. Capala’s 2014 to 2016 text should be checked against current guidance, and a newer introduction is also an option.
