About this comparison
Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.
Quick answer
These books serve different stages. Matthew Capala’s SEO Like I’m 5 (2014, Kindle updated to a 3rd edition in 2016) explains SEO basics in plain language for non-technical beginners. Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt’s The SEO Blueprint (2020) is an agency process for choosing keywords, deciding what to write, auditing and prioritizing pages, written for readers ready to act. If you are starting from zero, read Capala; if you know the basics and want an order of operations, read The SEO Blueprint.
What each book is about
SEO Like I’m 5: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization is Capala’s book for readers who want SEO explained without technical jargon. Capala founded the Alphametic agency and taught as an NYU adjunct professor. The description names entrepreneurs, small business owners, marketers, students, authors and bloggers as readers, and presents SEO as being as much about content, social presence and relationships as about code. Listed topics include free platforms and tools, building a search-friendly website, content strategy and blogging, keyword opportunities, earning backlinks, blogger and influencer outreach and social media strategy, with step-by-step instructions and many screenshots. No public table of contents was found. Retailer description.
The SEO Blueprint: How to Get More Organic Traffic Right NOW is a 275-page paperback by Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt, self-published in February 2020. It is not Glen Allsopp’s SEO Blueprint course or other books with the same title. Open Library record. The book is built on the workflow of Stewart’s former agency, WEBRIS, which the description says was acquired after about ten years of client work; Julia McCoy wrote the foreword. No public table of contents was found. The retailer description lists choosing and qualifying keywords, using competitor pages to rank for more terms, deciding what content to write, which pages not to build links to, site auditing with a list of errors that block page-one rankings, prioritizing high-potential pages and site structure for head terms. Retailer description.
Where they differ
Stage. Capala builds a first mental model of how a site gets found, in plain language. The SEO Blueprint assumes you are ready to make decisions: which keywords first, what to write, which pages to prioritize and which to leave alone.
Emphasis. SEO Like I’m 5 leans on content, blogging, outreach and social media. The SEO Blueprint leans on keyword qualification, competitor pages, audits and site structure.
What they share. Both are self-published by agency founders, and neither has a public table of contents, so both are judged here from retailer descriptions. Capala promises screenshots and step-by-step instructions; the Blueprint promises tools and templates that we could not confirm are still available. Its copy is written as direct-response sales copy.
Age. Capala’s text dates from 2014, with the Kindle edition updated in 2016, and the paperback may still carry the older text; it predates mobile-first indexing and Core Web Vitals. The SEO Blueprint is from 2020, before Google’s helpful content changes. Check both against current Google guidance.
A third option for AI search
Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. A beginner who wants Capala’s step-by-step approach applied to that question might look at AI SEO for Dummies, a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It adds a subject; it is not a traditional SEO primer or process.
