About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for SEO, and its listing says it is not a how-to book. Garrett French and Eric Ward’s Ultimate Guide to Link Building (2nd edition, 2020) is a specialist book on finding link opportunities and building an outreach prospect list. If SEO stalls in your company because other departments are not accountable for it, read Bowman; if your bottleneck is finding sites that might link to you, read French and Ward.

What each book is about

The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Two appendices list how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Table of contents.

Ultimate Guide to Link Building is by Garrett French and Eric Ward. Entrepreneur Press lists the second edition for January 2020, with ISBN 9781599186481 for the paperback. Publisher catalogue, page 31. An authorized excerpt begins with terms that define a market and uses them to locate different kinds of opportunities, such as expert interviews, resource curators and sites accepting relevant contributions. It also discusses finding existing interviews and developing a new group interview from that research. Second-edition excerpt.

Where they differ

The job. Bowman explains how to get product managers, developers, UX, merchandising, PR and other teams measured on their part of SEO. French and Ward explain how to work out which people and publications in a market might have a reason to reference your material. One organizes a company; the other solves a single practical difficulty.

Reader. Bowman writes for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and non-SEO staff at large organizations. French and Ward write for practitioners who already know SEO basics, such as people running outreach.

Format. Bowman offers a framework, an integration plan and resource appendices, not instructions. The link-building excerpt shows a worked prospecting process that does not depend on a specific tool, which you can read free before buying.

Age. Both predate current AI search. Bowman’s organizational process ages more slowly than tactics, but check her 2017 appendix links. Check any outreach tactic from French and Ward’s 2020 edition against Google’s current link spam policy, and match the second edition when buying.

Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. If that is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It is neither an organizational playbook nor a link-building book, and it does not replace either title.

Which should you read?

  • If you are an executive at a large company and SEO keeps losing out to other departments’ priorities, read The Executive SEO Playbook.
  • If you lead in-house SEO and need a plan for training and integrating other teams, read Bowman.
  • If you know SEO basics but struggle to find sites that might link to you, read Ultimate Guide to Link Building, starting with the free excerpt.
  • If you run outreach or digital PR and need a repeatable prospecting process, French and Ward is the closer subject match.
  • If you want both, an in-house lead could use Bowman to get PR and content teams accountable for search, and hand French and Ward’s prospecting process to whoever runs outreach.
