About these alternatives

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

If The Art of SEO is more than you need, choose by the reason. For a shorter start, read the Ahrefs SEO Book for Beginners or Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies. To learn by doing, use Jason McDonald’s SEO Workbook. For one specialty, pick a focused book such as Tech SEO Guide. For AI search, start with a 2026 title written for it.

Why readers look for an alternative

The fourth edition, published by O’Reilly in September 2023, is a broad reference: its contents move from search intent and keyword research through site architecture, technical SEO, structured data, analytics, auditing, links and local search. O’Reilly labels it beginner level, but it runs to 773 pages. Publisher details and contents.

That breadth is the reason to buy it, and also the most common reason to look elsewhere:

  • Length. A 773-page reference is a big commitment for a first book.
  • You need one specialty in depth, not every discipline at once.
  • You want strategy, not execution detail.
  • AI search. The 2023 edition includes one generative AI chapter covering capabilities, prompting and limitations, published before most current AI-search features.

Alternatives by reason

You want a shorter first book

The Ahrefs SEO Book for Beginners by Tim Soulo, Joshua Hardwick and Patrick Stox is a January 2023 hardcover adapted from seven chapters of Ahrefs’ online guide, covering how search engines work, keyword research and link building. Ahrefs’ book listing. Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies (7th edition, 2020) is a broad beginner introduction to traditional SEO; check its platform instructions against current documentation.

You learn by doing

Jason McDonald’s SEO Workbook (2025 edition) is organized as seven steps with chapter deliverables and worksheets, plus companion videos and quizzes, for businesspeople who want practical instructions in plain language. Author’s description.

You need one specialty in depth

  • Technical SEO with developers: Matthew Edgar’s Tech SEO Guide (Apress, 2023) is a reference for developers and marketers, with chapters on crawling and indexing, URL organization, schema, sitemaps, page experience, errors and redirects. Publisher contents.
  • Data and automation: Andreas Voniatis’ Data-Driven SEO with Python (Apress, 2023) expects basic Python and applies data science to keyword research, technical analysis, migrations and dashboards. Publisher contents.
  • Entities and semantic search: Dixon Jones’ Entity SEO looks at search through concepts and entities rather than keyword strings.
  • Link building: Garrett French and Eric Ward’s Ultimate Guide to Link Building focuses on link prospecting.

You need strategy rather than a manual

Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (2021) is about deciding what SEO should accomplish for a business, for managers, executives and experienced practitioners. It is explicitly not a step-by-step guide.

Three 2026 books are written about AI search. AI SEO for Dummies (Wiley) is a beginner-friendly, step-by-step introduction covering AEO and GEO, with a free companion toolkit. Ross Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization (Wiley) is for teams and leaders building a GEO program. Rodrigo Stockebrand’s Answer Engine Optimization (O’Reilly) is classed intermediate to advanced.

Keep The Art of SEO if

Keep it if you want most SEO disciplines in one edited volume, to read in sequence or to look up as problems come up. The public chapter-six sample shows keyword research worked through into a planning spreadsheet, so it also suits readers who want to organize decisions, not just learn concepts. Pair it with current platform documentation for anything that depends on changing search features, and with one of the AI-search books above if that is part of your job.
