Quick answer
Both books are for senior readers and neither is a how-to, but they answer different questions. Eli Schwartz’s Product-Led SEO (2021) is about deciding what SEO should accomplish for a business and why. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about getting a large organization to carry out SEO, by making the teams whose work affects search accountable for it. If you need a strategy, read Schwartz; if you have a strategy but the company is not executing it, read Bowman.
What each book is about
Product-Led SEO: The Why Behind Building Your Organic Growth Strategy is Eli Schwartz’s book, published by Houndstooth Press in 2021. The author positions it for marketing managers, executives and experienced practitioners, and emphasizes the reasoning behind a strategy and its connection to business results. He describes an approach to developing your own practices rather than following a universal recipe, and explicitly distinguishes it from step-by-step instructions. Author’s description.
The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Table of contents.
Where they differ
The question. Schwartz asks why and where to invest in organic growth. Bowman asks how a company gets product managers, developers, UX, merchandising, PR and others to build SEO into their work. Bowman’s pillars do include strategy, but her book is mainly about operations: roles, accountability, checks and training.
The organization. Bowman writes mainly for enterprises, where SEO stalls across departments. Schwartz’s audience is defined by role (managers, executives, experienced practitioners) rather than company size.
Practical material. Neither is a manual. Schwartz offers a way of thinking. Bowman offers an integration plan and two appendices of how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Note that “product-led SEO” also names an approach, and later articles about it may go beyond the 2021 text.
Age and publisher. Bowman’s book is from 2017 and self-published through her firm; Schwartz’s is from 2021 through Houndstooth Press. Both predate current AI search. Strategy and organizational process age more slowly than tactics, but check Bowman’s appendix links against current practice.
A third option for AI search
Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. If leadership is now asking that question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet, trackers and report templates, with no email required. It is an introduction to a subject, not a strategy book or an organizational playbook.
