About this comparison
Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.
Quick answer
These books do different jobs. The Art of SEO (4th edition, O’Reilly, 2023) is a 773-page reference on doing SEO, from keyword research and technical SEO to links, analytics and local search. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for SEO, and its own listing says it is not an SEO how-to book. If you do the work, read The Art of SEO; if you need departments across a company to support that work, read Bowman.
What each book is about
The Art of SEO is written by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola and published by O’Reilly, with the fourth edition dated September 2023. The publisher’s contents move from search intent, keyword research and planning into site architecture, technical SEO and structured data, then analytics, auditing, links and local search, plus one generative AI chapter. O’Reilly labels the edition beginner level. An authorized chapter-six sample shows keyword research moving from brainstorming into a working spreadsheet that connects terms to business priorities, topics and pages. Publisher contents.
The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover, with Kindle and ePUB editions. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, introducing an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Two appendices list how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Table of contents.
Where they differ
The job. The Art of SEO explains the disciplines: intent, keywords, architecture, technical SEO, structured data, links and analytics. Bowman’s book explains how to get the people whose work affects search, such as product managers, developers, UX, merchandising and PR, measured on it. One teaches the practice; the other organizes it. There is little overlap to weigh.
The reader. O’Reilly labels The Art of SEO beginner, and its contents start from search fundamentals. Bowman writes for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and non-SEO staff at large organizations, and the book assumes the reader already knows SEO basics.
Size and format. The Art of SEO is a 773-page reference built to be consulted as well as read, and its public sample asks readers to organize decisions in a planning spreadsheet. Bowman’s 198 pages build an argument and a plan; its practical material is the integration plan and the resource appendices, not instructions for keyword research or technical fixes.
Era. The Executive SEO Playbook dates from 2017, before AI Overviews and ChatGPT search. Organizational process ages more slowly than tactics, but check its appendix links against current practice. The Art of SEO is six years newer, though its generative AI chapter was written in 2023, before most current AI-search features.
A third option for AI search
Neither book is about how a business shows up in AI answers. Bowman’s current biography presents her as an AI visibility consultant, but the 2017 book does not cover AI search. If that is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It does not do either book’s job: it will not organize a company around SEO or cover every traditional discipline.

Which should you read?
- If you do SEO yourself and want one reference covering most disciplines, read The Art of SEO.
- If you are still learning SEO, read The Art of SEO first. Bowman assumes you know the basics.
- If you are an executive and SEO stalls because the teams that affect it are not accountable for it, read The Executive SEO Playbook.
- If you lead in-house SEO and need product, development and PR teams to build it into their work, read Bowman for the framework and integration plan.
- If you want both, practitioners can keep The Art of SEO as the working reference and read Bowman when the organization, not the technique, becomes the obstacle.
- If AI search is now part of your remit, add AI SEO for Dummies after either.

Frequently asked questions
Can The Executive SEO Playbook replace The Art of SEO?
No. The Executive SEO Playbook’s own listing says it is not an SEO how-to book; it covers how large organizations structure, measure and train for SEO. The Art of SEO covers the SEO disciplines themselves, from keyword research to technical SEO, links and analytics.
Which book suits an in-house SEO lead at a large company?
Often both. Jessica Bowman’s book addresses getting other departments accountable for SEO, which is a common in-house obstacle. The Art of SEO is the reference for the practitioner work itself.
Do The Art of SEO or The Executive SEO Playbook cover AI search?
The Art of SEO’s 2023 fourth edition has one generative AI chapter covering capabilities, prompting and limitations. The Executive SEO Playbook was published in June 2017 and does not cover AI search.
