About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

Both books are about doing SEO, but they come at it differently. The Art of SEO (4th edition, O’Reilly, 2023) is a 773-page reference covering most SEO disciplines, from intent and keywords to technical SEO, analytics and local search. Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt’s The SEO Blueprint (self-published, 2020) packages one agency’s workflow into a 275-page process. If you want breadth and a reference to return to, read The Art of SEO; if you want a single opinionated process to follow on a site, read The SEO Blueprint.

What each book is about

The Art of SEO is written by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola and published by O’Reilly, with the fourth edition dated September 2023. The publisher’s contents move from search intent, keyword research and planning into site architecture, technical SEO and structured data, then analytics, auditing, links and local search, plus one generative AI chapter. O’Reilly labels the edition beginner level. An authorized chapter-six sample shows keyword research moving from brainstorming into a working spreadsheet that connects terms to business priorities, topics and pages. Publisher contents.

The SEO Blueprint: How to Get More Organic Traffic Right NOW is a 275-page paperback by Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt, self-published in February 2020. It is not Glen Allsopp’s SEO Blueprint course or other books with the same title. The book is built on the workflow of Stewart’s former agency, WEBRIS, which the description says was acquired after about ten years of client work; Julia McCoy wrote the foreword. No public table of contents was found. The retailer description lists choosing and qualifying keywords, using competitor pages to rank for more terms, deciding what content to write, which pages not to build links to, site auditing with a list of errors that block page-one rankings, prioritizing high-potential pages and site structure for head terms. Retailer description.

Where they differ

Breadth versus a path. Both touch keywords, content, auditing, site structure and links. The Art of SEO adds dedicated material on technical SEO, structured data, analytics and local search, and is organized as a reference. The SEO Blueprint is organized around decisions in order: which keywords first, what to write, which pages to prioritize.

Reader. O’Reilly labels The Art of SEO beginner, and its contents start from fundamentals. The SEO Blueprint’s description addresses site owners ready to act on a process; a newcomer may want vocabulary first.

Publisher and evidence. The Art of SEO is an O’Reilly title with a public chapter list and an authorized sample. The SEO Blueprint is self-published with no public contents, so what we know comes from its retailer description, written in direct-response sales copy. Ahrefs includes it in its list of SEO books. The description promises access to the authors’ tools and templates, but we could not confirm that offer is still live.

Era. The SEO Blueprint dates from February 2020, before Google’s helpful content changes and AI search, so check its checklists and tool references against current guidance. The Art of SEO is from 2023, with one generative AI chapter written before most current AI-search features.

Neither book was written for today’s AI search. If your question is how a business appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI experiences, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet, trackers and report templates, with no email required. It adds a subject; it does not replace the traditional SEO process or reference either book offers.
