Quick answer
These books do different jobs for different readers. Matthew Capala’s SEO Like I’m 5 (self-published, 2014, Kindle updated to a 3rd edition in 2016) explains SEO basics in plain language for non-technical beginners such as bloggers and small business owners. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for SEO, written for executives and in-house teams who already know the basics. If you are learning what SEO is, read Capala; if SEO stalls in your company because other departments are not accountable for it, read Bowman.
What each book is about
The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Two appendices list how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Table of contents.
SEO Like I’m 5: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization is Capala’s book for readers who want SEO explained without technical jargon. Capala founded the Alphametic agency and taught as an NYU adjunct professor. The description names entrepreneurs, small business owners, marketers, students, authors and bloggers as readers, and presents SEO as being as much about content, social presence and relationships as about code. Listed topics include free platforms and tools, building a search-friendly website, content strategy and blogging, keyword opportunities, earning backlinks, outreach and social media strategy, with step-by-step instructions and many screenshots. Retailer description.
Where they differ
The job. Capala teaches what to do on a site: build it to be found, write content, find keywords, earn links. Bowman explains how a company gets product managers, developers, UX, merchandising, PR and other teams to build SEO into their work. One builds first skills; the other builds an organization. There is no real overlap.
The reader. SEO Like I’m 5 suits an individual doing the work, often alone. Bowman writes for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and non-SEO staff at large organizations, and assumes SEO basics.
Format. Capala promises step-by-step instructions with screenshots. Bowman’s practical material is a framework, an integration plan and resource appendices; expect guidance on roles and process, not instructions.
Age. Both are pre-AI-search books from the same period: Capala’s text dates from 2014 (Kindle updated 2016), Bowman’s from 2017. Tactical advice such as Capala’s tools, platforms and outreach dates faster than organizational process, but check Bowman’s appendix links too. Both are published independently, Capala’s self-published and Bowman’s through her own firm.
A third option for AI search
Neither book was written for AI search. If your question is how a business shows up in ChatGPT or Google’s AI experiences, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It adds a subject; it is neither a traditional SEO primer nor an organizational playbook.

Which should you read?
- If you have no technical background and want SEO explained simply, read SEO Like I’m 5, ideally the 2016 Kindle edition.
- If you blog or run a small business and will do the work yourself, SEO Like I’m 5 is pitched at you.
- If you are an executive at a large company and SEO keeps losing out to other departments’ priorities, read The Executive SEO Playbook.
- If you lead in-house SEO and need a plan for training and integrating other teams, read Bowman.
- If you want both, a non-SEO executive could read SEO Like I’m 5 for basic vocabulary, then Bowman for the organizational plan.
- If AI search is now on your list, add AI SEO for Dummies separately.
