About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs. Peter Kent’s SEO For Dummies (7th edition, Wiley, 2020) teaches what SEO involves: a broad beginner introduction for website owners. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for SEO, written for executives and in-house teams who already know the basics. If you are learning SEO, read Kent; if SEO stalls in your company because the teams that affect it are not measured on it, read Bowman.

What each book is about

SEO For Dummies is Peter Kent’s introduction in Wiley’s For Dummies series. His author page identifies the seventh edition, released in 2020, and lists resources chapter by chapter. The chapters start with search engines, search results and planning, move through keyword selection, page creation, speed, mobile design and structured data, then cover content, local search, indexing, links, images and video, with closing chapters on problems and staying informed. Earlier editions used the longer title Search Engine Optimization For Dummies. Author’s edition page.

The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. Author biography. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Two appendices list how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Table of contents.

Where they differ

The job. Kent explains how the parts of a website contribute to search, from keywords and pages to links and indexing. Bowman explains how to get the people whose work affects search, such as product managers, developers, UX, merchandising and PR, to own their part. One builds skills; the other builds an organization.

The reader. Kent writes for website owners starting out. Bowman writes for executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and non-SEO staff, mainly at large organizations, and assumes SEO basics. A small business owner doing the work alone is Kent’s reader, not Bowman’s.

Format. SEO For Dummies follows a chapter-by-chapter structure with a resource list on the author’s site. Bowman’s practical material is the integration plan and the appendices; expect guidance on roles, accountability and process, not instructions for keyword research or technical fixes.

Age. Both predate current AI search. Kent’s tool and platform instructions should be checked against current documentation. Bowman’s subject, organizational process, ages more slowly, but her 2017 appendix links may be out of date.

Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers. If that is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 title in the same Wiley For Dummies series as Kent’s book, covering visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet and trackers, with no email required. It adds a subject; it does not teach traditional SEO the way Kent does or organize a company the way Bowman does.
