About this comparison

Based on publisher and author information, contents and the sources listed below. We have not completed full reviews of these books.

Quick answer

These books do different jobs. Jessica Bowman’s The Executive SEO Playbook (2017) is about making a large organization accountable for SEO, and its listing says it is not a how-to book. Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt’s The SEO Blueprint (2020) is a hands-on agency process for choosing keywords, deciding what to write, auditing and prioritizing pages. If SEO stalls in your company because other departments are not accountable for it, read Bowman; if you want a process to run on a site, read The SEO Blueprint.

What each book is about

The Executive SEO Playbook: How to Integrate SEO Company-Wide for Increased Profitability is Bowman’s first edition, published in June 2017 by SEOinhouse.com, her own firm, at 198 pages in hardcover. Danny Sullivan wrote the foreword. Bowman managed in-house SEO at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com before founding SEOinhouse.com in 2008. The 12 chapters run from diagnosing whether an organization leads or avoids SEO to a step-by-step integration plan, with an in-house framework the author calls F2R, ten “pillars” split between SEO strategy and SEO operations, checks and balances, team building and training. Two appendices list how-to resources and enterprise in-house links. Table of contents.

The SEO Blueprint: How to Get More Organic Traffic Right NOW is a 275-page paperback by Ryan Stewart and David Krevitt, self-published in February 2020. It is not Glen Allsopp’s SEO Blueprint course or other books with the same title. Open Library record. The book is built on the workflow of Stewart’s former agency, WEBRIS, which the description says was acquired after about ten years of client work; Julia McCoy wrote the foreword. No public table of contents was found. The retailer description lists choosing and qualifying keywords, using competitor pages to rank for more terms, deciding what content to write, which pages not to build links to, site auditing with a list of errors that block page-one rankings, prioritizing high-potential pages and site structure for head terms. Retailer description.

Where they differ

The job. Bowman explains how to get product managers, developers, UX, merchandising, PR and other teams to own their part of SEO. The SEO Blueprint explains what to do on a site, in what order. One organizes the people; the other runs the work.

Setting. Bowman writes for large organizations with in-house teams and many departments, drawing on her in-house roles at Yahoo!, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Business.com. The SEO Blueprint comes from agency client work and addresses site owners and practitioners ready to act.

Reader. Bowman’s readers are executives (she names roles such as COO, CMO and CIO), in-house SEO teams and non-SEO staff, and she assumes SEO basics. The SEO Blueprint suits the person doing the hands-on work.

Evidence and age. Both are published by their authors: Bowman through her firm, Stewart under his own name. Bowman’s contents list is public; The SEO Blueprint’s scope comes from direct-response retailer copy, and its promised tools and templates could not be confirmed as still available. Bowman’s organizational process ages more slowly than the Blueprint’s 2020 checklists, which should be checked against current Google guidance.

Neither book covers how a business shows up in AI answers; both predate current AI search. If that is your question, AI SEO for Dummies is a 2026 Wiley For Dummies title on visibility in AI-powered search, including AEO and GEO. It is beginner-friendly and step by step, Wiley names business owners, marketers and SEO professionals as its readers, and a free companion toolkit includes a quickstart checklist, a First 30 Days worksheet, trackers and report templates, with no email required. It adds a subject; it is neither an organizational playbook nor a traditional SEO process.
